It’s spring and once things start to warm up, like many others, I go into full force cleaning mode.  At the top of my list…the windows.  Many of us think that simply whipping windows back and forth with a commercial cleaning solution is all that is required but there is more to it than that.  Let’s not forget the window tracks.  They tend to get looked over because no one wants to deal with the ickiness. But tracks are part of window cleaning too.  Here are some tips and tricks to get your windows tracks looking top notch.

Go beyond the glass and clean the whole window

Start with the tracks

I can't say that I have not been guilty of avoiding the tracks and just cleaning the glass in my windows. Nonetheless, it is just as important to clean the tracks. I do understand why so many people avoid them. Cleaning them is tedious, they are gunky and that black gue is made of who knows what all mixed together. However, leaving the gunk just means you will have more work to do next time and then you are risking it turning to mold if it isn't already. In the past, I thought the task a lot of work. Now I know, as intimidating as the black gunk might look cleaning it does not need to be a big job. Following are some tricks to do a great job easily and quickly.

How to clean window tracks

  1.  First, use your vacuum. Vacuum out any loose crumbs or other debris that is laying around in the tracks.  This works it’s best when it has been dry outside for a few days in a row so the dirt is dry as well.
  2.  Next, let baking soda clean for you.  It is time to loosen up that grime with some baking soda.  Sprinkle it lightly making sure all areas where dirt can be seen are covered.
  3. Dissolve that gue with vinegar.  You won’t need much, you just need the baking soda to be bubbling which means it is doing the job and most of the work.
  4. Walk away.  Let the baking soda and vinegar soak and work their magic for approximately 10 minutes.
  5. Loosen gunk with a toothbrush.  Most of the grime will be somewhat lifted from the baking soda but use the toothbrush unstick anything that is left.  Work the gunk towards the center.
  6. Wipe up with paper towels.  Now that everything is loose and pushed to one central spot it is easy to wipe it up.
  7. Get those hard to reach spots.  There should not be much dirt left but get in those corners and deep grooves.  Cover a butter knife with a wet microfiber cloth for hard to access places.  You could also use wet q-tips to do this.
  8. Wipe it clean.  It always feels good to do that one last wipe down where afterward everything is spic and span.  Use a clean and damp microfiber cloth and wipe the entire slider track.

Now your tracks should be clean and following this easy method will have saved you time and effort.  Job well done.
